The Victorian Institute’s Philosophy of Support

At the Victorian Institute of English and Mathematics, we believe every student has unique potential that deserves to be unlocked through personalised attention and expert guidance.

Our approach goes beyond traditional tutoring. We create a nurturing environment where students are encouraged to think critically, ask questions and enjoy the learning process. By focusing on individual growth, we help every child – no matter their starting point – build academic resilience and self-belief for long-term success.

We bridge the gap between classroom instruction and deep understanding through structured, evidence-based teaching methods. Whether preparing for NAPLAN, selective school entrance exams or scholarship assessments, our students benefit from a curriculum that balances academic extension with caring, empathetic support.

While we are proudly based in Cranbourne North, we also support students across Victoria through Zoom classes in both English and Mathematics. This allows families beyond our local community to access the same level of personalised instruction and academic excellence from home.

Our commitment is that every student – whether learning onsite or online – not only achieves stronger academic results but also develops genuine confidence and a lasting passion for English and Mathematics.

Meet Our Founder

I’m Ms Thanusha Gunasinghe, founder and head tutor at the Victorian Institute of English and Mathematics. For over three decades, I’ve dedicated my career to helping students build strong skills in English and Mathematics, as well as confidence in themselves. My journey began in Colombo in 1994, where I established a successful tutoring school of around 300 students. Today in Cranbourne North, I continue that mission by creating a warm, structured learning environment where every student is known, supported, and challenged to reach their full potential.

Academic Excellence

In addition to my teaching qualifications, I have completed 50 hours of training from the University of Cambridge in 1994, and I hold a Diploma in Spoken English for Speakers of Other Languages from Trinity College London. I have also earned an official Cambridge qualification, the First Certificate in English B2 First (FCE), and an Honours certification in Effective Speaking from the Institute for Examinations in English, Music, and Speech. As a corporate member of the English Speaking Board – International Ltd U.K since 1994, I have been committed to providing quality English language education to my students.

Global Training

My vision as an educator is to create a nurturing environment where children feel loved, respected, and encouraged to reach their full potential. I believe that every child is unique, and it is our responsibility to help them develop into well-rounded individuals who are capable of making positive contributions to society.

Specialized Support

My mission began at a young age when I established a private tutoring school in Colombo in 1994. My goal was to provide equal learning opportunities and sponsorships to children with less fortunate circumstances and those with learning difficulties. In 2006, I started an institution with around 300 students, and my passion for teaching has only grown stronger.

Leadership & Vision

As the owner and head tutor of The Victorian Institute of English and Mathematics, I am passionate about providing students with a high-quality education in English and Mathematics. With my experience and qualifications, I am committed to helping students develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their academic pursuits.
